Method One

Through Local Security Policy

Note
This method is for the Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions only. For Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions, see METHOD TWO below. 
1. Open Administrative Tools.
NOTE: In Start Menu or Control Panel (Classic View).

2. Click on Local Security Policy.

3. In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy.

4. In the left pane, click on Security Options.

5. In the right pane near the bottom, click on Network security: LAN manager authentication level.

6. Click the drop down box, and click Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.

7. Click on OK.

8. Restart the computer.

Method Two
Through the Registry

Note
This method is for all Vista versions. See the video below to also help.
1. Open the Start Menu.

2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.

3. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.

4. In regedit, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
5. In the right pane, right click LmCompatibilityLevel and click Modify.
NOTE: If it doesn’t already exist, create a DWORD value named LmCompatibilityLevel

6. Set the value to 1

7. Reboot

Let me introduce you to “Firebug”. This is a great extension for Firefox, and will become your primary debugging tool as a web designer.

Where to get it:

Check out http://getfirebug.com/ for a download.

Once you install it and restart your browser you can inspect any web element within any webpage to see the layout, style sheet, or hidden formatting.

The context sensitive menu:

Once you click the “Inspect Element” right-click context- sensitive menu item you will be greeted with the Firebug window inset that will give you more info about your page than you will know what to do with. Go ahead, give it a try!

I work with a lot of really smart and motivated people who are looking to learn a little bit about web design. To get their feet wet, figuratively speaking, or at least understand a little bit about what happens on the internet. Look, honestly, there is nothing natural about this and having a place to ask questions can be a good place to start.

The biggest problem is that the language is completely different. How does one know where to even begin. I want to start that discussion and answer questions from anyone who asks. Please comment and I will do my best to answer. Follow me on Twitter, or ask on my Facebook page.

Enough Introduction

That’s enough prelude.

Let’s start with the language. I’m not going to give you definitions, I’m going to tell you where to find them byusing as many pictures as I can.

1. What is an address, or http, or a URL. These are all the same thing! You would be amazed how often I get this question, “where do I type in the www.whatever.com??”.

You can put that into the “address bar” (take a look at the picture), I also show where the back and forward buttons are.

2. Here is a question I get whenever showing instructions with images, “My browser does not look anything like that”

Great question! Everyone has a different configuration. There are also no standards. Your browser is like your car. While it’s different than your neighbors, it will do more or less the same thing. The big brands are:

1.1. Internet Explorer (above). Chances are that if you’re on a PC you are running this browser.

1.2. Firefox (the second most popular browser):

1.3. Chrome (The Google, yes like the search engine, they make one now, browser):

1.4. Safari (if you’re on an Apple Mac/iMac/MacBook Pro you’re probably using it):

1.5. There are many others, and yours may look a little different and still be one of the browsers up there.

2. “But my browser is Internet Explorer and it doesn’t look anything like your picture”

Here you’ve hit on a major issue with the computer. Every month something changes, moves, get’s a new look, or disappears all together. Unless you’re really watching closely, you will miss it. There are many many changes, and it’s okay to ask questions. Even experts do!

3. Google it!

Here is the final bit of advice for my first post. If you have any questions about your computer, or the internet, or even why your cat, Mittens, has decided to pee on your bed, just “Google it”.

Each new browser now has the “Search bar” built in. You can type in your question and results will pop up. Click around, if you don’t think the answer is there, try asking the question differently.
